Bible reading: Isaiah 20-22, Luke 9
Reel thoughts:
I've always liked the way Jesus originally sent out the disciples to spread the gospel. He gave them power and authority, not to lord over people but to solve problems. Additionally He told them to keep it simple. Share the message and if people accept it- great. If the don't, then keep it moving.

Reel Thoughts:
Obedience is thicker than blood. True story. Sometimes blood relatives are overrated. What you really need is friends who share your faith and can encourage, support, and challenge you in the Lord.

5.21.12
bible reading: Isaiah 4-5
reel thoughts:
God really is the author of the "turnaround". I've been sitting here this evening trying to figure a few things out, and each time I go down a path where I think I have the solution- it seems to be met with either a dead end or more frustration. And that starts the cycle of self-doubt and feelings of inadequacy. But then I remember God, and I hear Him saying, "just trust me". And I think about what I just read tonight about Isaiah, who, when he came face to face with God, all he could think about was how inadequate he was in measure to God's holy stature. But God fixed that perspective for him by taking it upon himself to make Isaiah whole, and before you know it, not only did Isaiah seem to be a different man, but he was acting differently. Speaking up when God requested a man to send to the people. He found himself, after losing himself, by coming to terms with his own limitations and God's limitless possibilities.
God is a God of limitless possibilities. Stop putting him in the box of your low expectations for what He can do.

5.20.12
Bible reading: Isaiah 1-3, Luke 5
Reel thoughts:
As i sit here reading the first few chapters of Isaiah's warnings to the people of the kingdom of Judah and Israel before they fell, I can't help but wonder, why were these warnings falling on so many deaf ears, and how often does that happen today? Also, I'm struck by the "they've made their bed, now they have to sleep in it" tone that seems to be coming through in God's message through Isaiah. Thank God we're under a better covenant, one of grace, and not just one of fulfilling the requirements of laws. I wouldn't want God to judge me based on me solely. I need His grace to be "good enough".
Also, in Luke 5- now with this "sin consciousness" perspective, I'm noticing how so many of the early disciples (check out Peter's initial response to Jesus- "Master leave, I'm a sinner and can't handle this holiness...") were unprepared even to accept God's new gift of grace.
there's a link there- between accepting God's grace and forgiveness and real power. People who are full of themselves miss this link..but those who are empty vessels...they're open to Him.

5.17.12
bible reading: 2 kings 22-23, Luke 3
reel thoughts:
The biggest surprise was that none of the kings had actually celebrated Passover or many of the other customs written into the law, because they hadn't actually read the law. Look how far they diverged from the original purpose of their nation. I wonder what lessons that has for us today.
Another key message from both scripture readings: reforms alone aren't going to cut it. God is looking for a complete change of heart and mind.

5.9.12 unconventional God
bible reading: 2 kings 6-7, 2 corinthians 12
reel thoughts:
God is an unconventional God- but he's what you would expect in one category: He demands, deserves, and expects full and total surrender to Him of your life, will, choices, everything- in order to be in real relationship with Him. How's that for unconventional? In a day and age where we all like to get something for nothing, God demands everything we have for everything He has to offer. And conventional wisdom says that the cost is too high...well we all know how misguided "conventional wisdom" can be. God's the only convention I need. It's when we start living by this motto, that we'll really experience the fullness of everything He has to offer, including His grace and love.
